Copper Water Jug Guide (smooth)

Kopero Copper Jug Smooth, product photo on a white background

The jug is made of solid copper, with a matching lid. Below you'll find how to use it for the first time, how to let the water rest for the whole family, and how to keep it clean.

In six steps

  1. Clean the jug first. Before first use, polish the jug and lid with lemon and salt (not too hard: salt is mildly abrasive and dissolves well in the lemon juice). Rinse thoroughly and dry both parts right away.

    Clean the jug first.
  2. Fill it with still drinking water. Water only. No juice, no carbonated or acidic drinks.

Fill it with still drinking water.
  3. Put the lid on. The lid keeps dust out and rests loosely on the jug. Lift the jug by the handle, not by the lid.

    Put the lid on.
  4. Let the water rest overnight. Set the jug up in the evening and pour the next morning. Drink the water within 24 hours.

    Let the water rest overnight.
  5. Wash it by hand. Warm water and a soft cloth, lid separately. Dry both parts right away and store the jug open.

    Wash it by hand.
  6. Polish when the shine fades. Every week or two with lemon and salt (not too hard: salt is mildly abrasive and dissolves well in the lemon juice). On a large surface you'll see the patina faster, so take your time and polish it in sections.

Patina is part of it

Solid copper changes colour slightly on its own as you use the jug. That's completely normal and actually a sign of pure, uncoated copper. On a larger surface like this jug, you'll notice it a bit sooner than on smaller drinkware. If you prefer the shine, simply polish the jug up with lemon and salt (not too hard: salt is mildly abrasive and dissolves well in the lemon juice).

Cleaning

Never use a dishwasher or harsh cleaning products. Half a lemon with a pinch of salt is enough to make the jug shine again; work in sections on a large surface. Rinse well and dry the jug and lid right away.

Not dishwasher safe

The heat and dishwasher detergent attack the copper and leave dull, uneven patches.

How the shine lasts longer

Polishing brings the shine back. To hold on to it, a hair-thin layer of wax keeps the air off the metal and stretches it from days to weeks. That is what how to keep copper shiny is about.
